A Feast by the Fire: Signature Dishes at The Double Red Duke

The Cotswolds has become renowned for being one of the top foodie destinations in the country and our ethos at the Double Red Duke, is an unpretentious menu of British classics with a refined edge that make the most of local seasonal ingredients – as well as our open fire grill. We cook everything over the best wood and charcoal from Whittle and Flame, using one of the most advanced grill cooking systems out there.

Adventurous starters include wood-fired aubergine with a miso dip, tempura purple sprouting broccoli with burnt lemon aioli and devilled lambs’ kidney, which is something of a cult favourite. And you’ve simply got to try the seared scallops (food critic Jay Rayner dubbed them “redemptive”).
Mains are largely pub classics with a fine edge, with the likes of half a rotisserie chicken with lemon aioli, braised fallow deer with celeriac, and of course everyone’s favourite, triple cooked chips. Meat-eaters will be impressed by the separate steak menu, which is divided into breed and cut (choices include Longhorn, Galician Blond and Aberdeen Angus, with the requisite farms noted too). Kids aren’t forgotten either, with dishes perfectly tailored to their more discerning palettes – think cheese burger and chips, sausage and mash or pizzetta, and of course, ice cream sundaes with chocolate sauce to finish.

On Sundays, it’s all about the roast, with roast sirloin of beef, grilled free range chicken or rotisserie pork shoulder to choose from. Vegetarians are well catered to with the Delica pumpkin, while fish lovers will enjoy the monkfish with celeriac purée and red wine and brown butter sauce. Everything is served with all the trimmings, of course, including deliciously crispy and fluffy roast potatoes, carrots and seasonal greens, plus the piece de la resistance, cauliflower cheese.

We appreciate that you need a proper cooked breakfast to set you up for a day of walking, cycling or otherwise exploring in the Cotswolds. As well as the traditional English fry-up we’ve also got our take on the classic fast food breakfast muffin, with a sausage patty, bacon, fried egg and cheese. There are the hangover-vanquishing Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine and Eggs Royale too, plus avocado and poached eggs on sourdough toast if you’re feeling more virtuous. In a rush? Get one of our local pastries to go – the cheese and Marmite swirl is always a hit.

For the ultimate foodie experience or a special occasion, then be sure to secure a spot at the 10-seater Chef’s Table, where you can watch the team at work, like a live-action version of The Bear (but hopefully a little less stressful).  If you’ve ever wanted to know how to cook your fillet to perfection, now is the time to take notes.
