The Mason’s Arms is getting bedrooms

The Mason’s Arms has been trading since 1610. It has seen off a good deal of change in that time, absorbed a few different names and remained, through all of it, exactly the kind of pub that Clanfield needs it to be. From 14th September 2026, it will also have somewhere to sleep.

Eight bedrooms are opening upstairs at The Mason’s Arms. Reservations open in early August. It’s a proper development for a pub that has, until now, been the place you visited before going home, and it changes the nature of a Clanfield trip entirely.

What the Mason’s Arms is

For anyone arriving here without the backstory: the Mason’s Arms is a Grade II-listed pub in the centre of Clanfield, Oxfordshire, trading continuously since 1610. It was formerly The Clanfield Tavern, and reopened as The Mason’s Arms when Country Creatures took it on. Low ceilings, original floors, and a bar that has clearly been used by a great many people over a very long time.

It is listed in the Top 50 Gastropubs 2026. The cooking is proper pub food with a daily blackboard, generous plates, and a Sunday roast worth building a weekend around. The Guinness is good, one pint has a habit of becoming two!

Directly across the road is The Double Red Duke, the hotel-restaurant that has made Clanfield one of the better-known Country Creatures destinations. The two pubs are different enough that they work alongside each other without competition. Until now, the Mason’s Arms was the one without rooms. That all changes come September.

Eight bedrooms, upstairs

Eight bedrooms will open upstairs from 14th September, and they’re expected to carry the Country Creatures aesthetic: the same approach to original features, considered materials and rooms that feel like they belong to the building rather than having been installed in it.

The pitch, when they open, will be a straightforward one: arrive, drop your bags, walk downstairs to the bar, eat something good, sleep well, have breakfast worth getting up for. The building has been doing the first three parts for over four hundred years. The last two are new.

What Clanfield offers as a base

Clanfield sits in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, about thirty minutes from Oxford by the A4095. The countryside around it is good walking territory with open fields, stone walls, and quiet lanes that don’t require a route planner. The Double Red Duke is across the road, with a shepherd’s hut spa if the weekend calls for it. The Mason’s Arms itself has a garden that comes into its own in summer.

For anyone staying at the Mason’s Arms and wanting a change of scene for one meal: the Duke is a different kitchen, a different atmosphere and a different proposition. Both are Country Creatures. Neither requires the other, but both work better for the proximity.

How to book

Reservations for the Mason’s Arms bedrooms open at the end of July 2026, with the first guests arriving from 14th September. Bookings will be available through the Mason’s Arms on the Country Creatures website. Table bookings are already open, the pub itself is very much trading.

Eight rooms won’t last long once word gets around. If a September or autumn stay is on your mind, booking when reservations open is the right approach.
